My Journey To A More Magical Life

How the mundane leads me to a more enchanted existence

I used to think that magic was meant to feel a certain way, that it would be found in life’s biggest moments. I thought it was supposed to feel like fireworks; spontaneous, unpredictable, over-the-top. While that can be true, I’ve learned the most magical moments are often waiting for you in the mundane.

Magic doesn’t scream, it whispers.

Magic isn’t going to chase us down. It waits patiently in the quiet for us to notice.

When I first reconnected with my intuition through Bella Lively and her Inner Voice Facilitator Training, it felt like a whole new world had opened up for me. Initially I had that fireworks feeling, but as I continued down the path of integrating my intuition more into my life, the voice I heard started to get quieter. It spoke to me through whispers, little nudges and inexplicable feelings. Naively I thought that if I went deeper and did all the “right” things, it would eventually lead me back to the life I knew. I kept wanting to “go back” to the hustle, to doing it all, to ignoring my needs.

I wanted to feel like I could do it all. If I’m being honest, I still long for who I used to be sometimes. I think it’s part of being human. We long for what once was and what could be instead of focusing on what is.

I often wonder what would happen if we traded nostalgia for mystery. What might be possible if we trained our minds to look for the quiet whispers of magic instead of romanticizing what no longer exists?

As humans, we are built to constantly look for what’s wrong. It’s a survival mechanism that’s kept us alive and safe during primitive times, but is an outdated instinct we no longer need. I’ve learned through my somatic training that it takes conscious effort to look for the good.

Wild, right?

We naturally look for the bad, but have to intentionally seek out the good.

I’ve discovered the easiest way for me to create more positive and nourishing inputs is through my daily walk.

Walks with my dog, Cauchy, are often the most important part of my day and what I look forward to most. It’s a time where I put away my phone and focus on connecting with my surroundings. It started with my intention to really nurture my relationship with Cauchy. Her walks are her time. I try to view them as a way for us to spend quality time together and grow closer. They’ve slowly evolved into something more. While connecting with Cauchy and giving her dedicated time to explore remains at the heart of our walks, I’ve noticed my capacity has expanded, allowing me to let more in.

My walks with Cauchy offer me the gift of presence. I focus on attuning to her needs. I get curious about what she’s interested in and from there I’ve started to cultivate a relationship with my surroundings. I’m learning which types of plants draw me in. My mom tells me I love the wispy wild plants. She’s not wrong. I adore the way wildflowers dance in the wind, and how you never quite know how they’ll decide to grow. I admire the mature trees I see and all the wisdom they hold. I like to think about their roots reaching out to each other for connection and community.

Over time, these walks have started to feel more and more magical. Each walk feels like a conversation. I get to see the flowers transform as the season progresses, checking in on them like I would a friend. There’s so much possibility held in each walk. I often wonder what I’ll see and how the world might choose to communicate with me that day.

This is what true magic is. It’s looking up at the sky with wonder and possibility. It’s believing in signs, not coincidences. We all have the ability to experience magic in the world around us.

We create our own meaning.

For me, walking is how I cultivate more magic but your magic might show up differently. Maybe your magic is found when you cook, bringing together ingredients in an unexpected way. Or perhaps you find magic through music, whether it be bringing a piece to life or listening to another’s work.

We might find magic tucked away in different places, but one thing remains true. Magic will not be found by rushing or hustling. It requires us to slow down and tune into the details of life. It asks us to get clear about what we’re looking for, and once you do, it might change your life forever.

I can’t unsee the way flowers dance in the wind now. I’m filled with delight each time I see an angel number. I can’t help but wave at every seal I see. You don’t need a wand or a spell to create magic, just pure presence.

And so, I leave you with this parting question: What magic do you want to create in your life?
